Suomenlinna <\/strong><\/p>\n

Off the coast of Helsinki lies Suomenlinna sea fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that is one of Finland\u2019s most popular tourist attractions, and one of the largest sea fortresses in the world. Suomenlinna is also a city district in Helsinki, and has about 850 residents who live there all year round.<\/p>\n

Suomenlinna offers a lot to see and do for people of all ages. You can for example get acquainted with the history of the island on one of the fascinating guided walks organised by the Ehrensv\u00e4rd Society. Among their choices they also offer adventure tours for kids, as well as sailing tours on the cannon sloop Diana. In addition to the guided tours, you can find a variety of museums for different tastes on the island, the submarine Vesikko being one of them.<\/p>\n

Of course you can also explore the fortress on your own, for example the islands beautiful nature and its beach cliffs and park landscapes. The island also offers a wide range of restaurants and caf\u00e9s, from small idyllic caf\u00e9s and lunch eateries to fine dining restaurants.<\/p>\n

The main means of transportation on Suomenlinna is on foot, and there are lots of cobblestone streets on the island that may be challenging to move on in wheelchairs or with prams. You can however find a map of a more accessible route on Suomenlinna\u2019s website>><\/a><\/p>\n

Lonna <\/strong><\/p>\n

Lonna is a small island situated between Helsinki Market Square and Suomenlinna Sea Fortress. The island opened to the public in the summer of 2014. The 150-meter-long island is part of the city district of Suomenlinna, and during its history Lonna has also been the place of negotiations for the fate of Suomenlinna. The island once acted as a place for storing sea mines, and later also served as a degaussing station for ships. The governance of Lonna was handed over from the armed forces to the Governing Body of Suomenlinna in 1999, and the restauration of the island for public use began.<\/p>\n

These days the island is a joyous leisure island with a restaurant and a caf\u00e9 & bar, as well as function venues available for private hire. Despite its small size, the islands relaxed atmosphere will have you enjoying your stay there for a longer time. On the island you can also find a public traditional sauna with a terrace for cooling off, and having a dip in the sea is also possible.<\/p>\n
