Korkeasaari Zoo – Welcome to the island of animals!

Korkeasaari Zoo was founded in 1889 and is one of the world’s oldest zoos. The zoo is home to 150 animal species and nearly 1000 plant species that are a testament to the diversity of nature. About a third of the animal species in the zoo are endangered.

Endangered species are bred in Korkeasaari to protect them and to ensure their continued existence. The majority of animals in Korkeasaari are born either in Korkeasaari or in other zoos. Each visitor to Korkeasaari participates in the preservation work: by visiting the zoo you support Korkeasaari’s work in biodiversity preservation, ecology education, study of endangered species, as well as wildlife reintroduction.

Korkeasaari is a popular travel destination and the island also holds a souvenir shop, two restaurants and kiosks, as well as places where you can enjoy your own lunch, for example the barbecuing huts.

Preserving the unique nature of our archipelago is important to us, and our vessels operating on this route are solely fuelled with
renewable fuel oil. As pioneers we want to take part in developing low-emission solutions. By using renewable fuel oil we reduce our carbon footprint on the route in question by up to 90% compared to fossil fuels.

We recommend arriving at the Market Square by public transport, if possible. You can find more information in HSL’s Journey Planner >>
